“Whether we can accomplish the mission presented here by Mazzucato is left to those who will have the pleasure of reading this informative book to decide for themselves. After the COVID-19 pandemic, the author herself is cooling our enthusiasm by stating unequivocally that the world’s most affluent governments have failed to draw the proper lessons on health care, even from such a devastating disaster. Nonetheless, I find some hope for improvement. For example, in how decisively European countries responded with economic sanctions to Russian aggression in Ukraine. This reaction is worth comparing with how these economies responded, for example, during the last direct conflict between Great Britain and Russia – the Crimean War (1853-1856). While English soldiers were dying in the offensive, buying Tsarist war bonds on the London Stock Exchange was relatively easy. If we consider this, today’s situation indicates some improvement and allows for optimism.”
(from my intro to the Polish edition)
Stay tuned; the person who wrote the Polish intro to the first of her books (The Entrepreneurial State), a few months later, became Prime Minister of that country!
