On July 6th, 2022, I had the pleasure of discussing the future of Economics with the students from the Visegrad countries participating in the Final of
It is the largest business competition in Central and Eastern Europe addressed to high school students. The results of the 8th edition international Final will be announced tonight in Warsaw. https://businessismore.eu
In my lecture, I have presented briefly the main problems of the modern economic mainstream – the Neoclassical Theory. I have focused on two areas significant for me: the Digital Economy & Climate Change.
Talking about the Digital Economy, I have referred to 2022 work by Nicolas Petit and Thibault Schrepel showing that new perspectives like Complexity Science are necessary to go “beyond the simplistic descriptions of markets and firms proposed by the neoclassical model.”
To underline the problems of Neoclassical theory in analyzing Climate Change, I have quoted the latest book by Steve Keen – The New Economics: A Manifesto.
I concluded the meeting by suggesting that the works of many great scholars, who analyze the modern economy from different perspectives, demonstrate the importance of the History of Economic Thought in understanding ongoing events.
We need to remind it, because as I like to joke:

I want to thank the organizers for the invitation and wish the best of luck to all the participants of this year’s High School Business Challenge. Cannot wait for another opportunity to discuss alternative approaches to Economics with you!
